Gessificazione di Venezia

In queste pagine è documentato lo stato dei mattoni, della pietra d'Istria, dei marmi di Verona, e più in generale dei calcari a Venezia. Come si può vedere l'aggressione sulfurea stà divorando le pietre con una velocità che non consente più esitazioni.
La maggior parte delle ferite che vedete è recentissima.
Evidentemente la concentrazione di zolfo nell'aria ha raggiunto il livello critico soprattutto con le inclusioni di calcite, e le scioglie molto in profondità, dividendo ogni pietra in piccoli sassi.
Guardate cosa accade ai capitelli della Basilica di San Marco e in quale stato si stà riducendo la Pietra d'Istria! Con questa velocità di corrosione fra dieci anni la maggior parte dei fregi e dei trafori sarà stata abrasa, e le stesse pietre di sostegno non reggeranno il peso degli edifici! Le colonne della chiesa del Rosario alle Zattere (Gesuati) hanno già spezzato i plinti su cui poggiano! Pietre e marmi si trasformano in gesso a vista d'occhio in tutta la città:

Venice becomes chalk

In these pages we document the state of the stonework - bricks, Istria stone, Verona marble, and generally all of the calcars - of Venice. As will be seen, the assault of sulphur is consuming stones at a rate that allows us no more time for hesitation and speculation as to the effect on the fabric of the city. It is happening before our eyes. Most of the damage is very recent. Sulphur concentration in the air has reached a critical point. Calcitic crystalline inclusions, deep inside the stones, have been substantially dissolved, resulting in the structure of the stones breaking down.    One major example is the capitals of St.Mark's Basilica, and most other Istrian stones around Venice are in as bad a state. At this rate of corrosion, within ten years most of the decoration and pierced marble fretwork and arches of the town will be erased, and the structural stones will be unable to support the weight of the buildings! The columns of Rosario's church on the Zattere (Gesuati) have already broken through their plinths!
Marble and stones throughout the town are turning to chalk as this is being read.
STOP ENGINES AND MOTORS OPERATING IN THE TOWN, OR THEIR SULPHUR EMISSIONS WILL DESTROY VENICE.
